Open Enrollment Officially Over!

“That’s All Folks!” Open Enrollment officially ended March 31st. What does that mean for those individuals who were not able to enroll onto a Qualified Health Plan?

You can still  purchase health insurance so long as you qualify for a special enrollment period. If you have a qualifying life event you may be eligible to enroll.

Examples of qualifying life events:

  • Marriage
  • Having a baby
  • Adopting a child or placing a child up for adoption or foster care
  • Moving outside your insurer’s coverage area
  • Losing other health coverage (including; due to losing job-based coverage, divorce, the end of an individual policy plan year in 2014, COBRA expiration, aging off a parent’s plan, losing eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP, and similar circumstances.
  • Gaining citizenship
  • Leaving incarceration

Important: Voluntarily ending coverage doesn’t qualify you for a special enrollment period. Losing coverage that doesn’t qualify as minimum essential coverage doesn’t qualify either i.e. Short Term Coverage.
